TrawlerFest Two-day Seminar
Topic:**SOLD OUT** EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DIESEL ENGINES

Tuesday and Wednesday, May 12 – 13, 8:30am – 5:30pm (Both Days)
Presented by: Nigel Calder, Steve Zimmerman and Engine Manufacturers
Lead presenters are the dream team of Nigel Calder, author of Marine Diesel Engines, and Steve Zimmerman, owner of four boatyards and with four decades of experience in marine engines and systems. The first day begins with basic theory, troubleshooting and maintenance in the morning. In the afternoon the class breaks into groups and rotates between three engine stations for hands-on work. Day two will continue with hands-on training and then focus on common engine problems seen in the boatyard, repowering, powertrain issues (from couplings to propellers), more hands-on with a session on electrical system troubleshooting with multi-meters, and generator installations, including critical safety issues related to AC systems. A factory rep will explain what government emissions regs mean for the consumer. There will be a session on modern software-based maintenance. The class ends with all the presenters on stage for panel discussion and audience Q&A. Class size limited to 36.

Bunzel and Zimmerman will compare and contrast the East Coast waterways to the familiar waters of the Pacific Northwest as well as discuss boat transport options, whether by ship or overland.

Never before at TrawlerFest-Anacortes has there been a course for consumers that addresses so many facets of boat-buying, beginning literally from the bottom up. The day begins with a discussion of why hull form matters with legendary boatbuilder George Buehler of Diesel Duck fame. PassageMaker Troubleshooter columnist and boatyard guru Steve Zimmerman talks about fiberglass construction. Dylan Bailey, steel boatbuilder and surveyor, briefs the audience on the merits of metal, and the morning ends with a discussion of epoxy/wood boat building with one of its greatest practitioners, Sam Devlin. The next day Krantz will talk about yacht brokers and elements of a good contract. Jeremy Paulus of the Boat Insurance Agency joins advise on how to choose the right cruising policy. Zimmerman and Bailey will discuss how to choose the rightsurveyors and  Then we will have conduct a panel discussion, beginning with the KIS principle—keep it simple—and how the failure to do so can throw a boat deal off the rails. The seminar ends the panel engaging the audience in a Q&A format. Taken together, the advice from these experts could save you thousands of dollars.

On the first morning Bob Sweet, author of Powerboat Handling Illustrated takes attendees through the theory of close-quarters maneuvering, docking and other piloting techniques. On the second morning the class breaks into four groups of five. Two groups will board two different boats for on-the-water training with instructor-captains, the other two will receive on the dock instruction from Sweet in knot work and line-handling. Half way through the morning the groups on the water will switch with their counterparts on the docks. Class size limited to 20.

Few other cruising destinations rival the Inside Passage to Southeast Alaska.
