Seattle Seafair is going virtual again in 2021. Seafair is an annual Seattle tradition that won’t have live hydroplane racing, fireworks at Gas Works Park, the Torchlight Parade and the million-dollar Blue Angels flying overhead. Stay Tuned some in person events will be included.
Seafair spokesperson Patrick Harrison spoke about the Seafair pandemic news, that while the WA state’s Phase 3 guidelines are still in action as of May 2021, this only allows small and medium-size events, the “Seafair leadership recognizes the guidelines will not support events the scale of a citywide festival.”

Known and loved as an unofficial Seattle holiday, Seafair Weekend Festival is one of the largest boating events, airshows, and festivals all rolled into one. Along the shores of Lake Washington, fans experience the roar of the US Navy’s Blue Angels headlining the Boeing Seafair Airshow and the world’s fastest racing boats competing for the HomeStreet Bank Cup. In addition, you’ll discover local food, music, wake boarding, cars and more, bringing people together each summer for this uniquely Seattle event.
Although we can’t celebrate together in Seattle 2021, we’re all looking forward to 2022 when we can finally come together as a community and celebrate and watch the Blue Angels soar overhead and hear the thunder of the hydros on Lake Washington. Make sure to check out all of the fun air show and racing – related activities on the Virtual Festival page coming June 18. 2021 Log Boom and ticket holders will be receiving an email soon regarding refund options.
Milk Carton Derby, The Greenlake staple will not be happening this year in 2021. Contestants are still encouraged to create their milk carton boats at home and enter them online for a chance to win prizes.
Seafair Triathlon, (July 25) This will combine in-person and virtual events “based upon the competitor’s comfort level,” with the former taking place at Sammamish State Park. More details regarding routes and registration will be available at www.seafair.com
Torchlight Parade (July-August) Seafair is expanding the modified version it used last year for the parade. A Seafair caravan will run through nominated neighborhoods each week in July and August.
Torchlight Run (July 31) Like the triathlon, competitors in the annual 5K can choose a virtual or in-person event.
Seattle Fleet Week (Aug. 2-6) This will be fully virtual, with over 100 Fleet Week and Boeing Maritime activities, including interviews with Blue Angel pilots and ship tours.
Blue Angels: Boeing Air Show, Another fully virtual event as the Blue Angels flyover will be simulated, not in person in 2021.
Hydroplane Racing, Unfortunately, high-speed boats will not be ripping through Lake Washington this year. Drivers will compete virtually at home and 70-year retrospective will air on KING 5.
Pandemic World in the Pacific Northwest has another annual staple that isn’t live: “Seafair is eager to bring back events and remains heartbroken fans must limit social gatherings for a second summer,” Harrison said. “Seafair is proud to be a part of a community that is taking steps together to ensure future celebrations can occur safely.” Practice Safe Boating PNW! www.seafair.com
