Seattle Yacht Club – Opening Day!  Enjoy the whoop-it-up highlights on the water! UW Crew Good Luck Racing May 2, 2015!  Opening Day Boating Season Is Here!

The Northwest boating industry and community is a bit more die-hard than other regions.   Boaters here tend to take their boats out rain or shine, if they waited for the sun to come out and perfect weather conditions they would never leave their slip.  The ever busy NW commercial boating world is loaded with seasoned fishermen, seafood fisheries and tug and barge boats who call the Bering Sea and Bristol Bay, Alaska their home away from home.

Despite our more than capable and salty sea dog NW boating community it is tradition to celebrate the Opening Day of Boating Season the first weekend in May.  Spectators crowd the shorelines and waterfront parks of Seattle’s Portage Bay and Montlake Cut.  Boats decorated with ‘Myths & Monsters’ theme parading past judges and spectators watching on the log booms and on the hook on the parade route; with lots of ‘whoop it up cheers’ – high in fun factor celebrating.  The Cut is blustering with boating activity of all ages – boat sizes and models.

This May – 70 degree bright and sunny Opening Day weather brings  nearly every style and make of boat imaginable – powerboats, rowing crews, paddle boats, sailboats, antique boats, wooden classics, kayaks, stand up paddle boarders and superyachts participated in the annual Opening Day parade sponsored by the Seattle Yacht Club.  This year as a new added bonus they had racing shells from top-caliber collegiate and international rowing teams, featuring teams from around the country and world competing in the Windermere Cup Crew Races.

The Seattle Fire Department boats  will cruise by to spraying the crowds bringing lots of screams and excitement to children.  Next were the two flotilla yachts carrying musicians from the University of Washington – UW Huskies and Washington State University – WSU Cougars – Marching bands set the musical tempo for the day.  This encouraged the raft up boats on the log boom to trick out their boats with UW & WSU banners and flags representing their school spirit and college pride with booming music from the aft deck with plenty of stern and swim step dancing from these high energy alumni’s and current college students.
