King Crab Season, October 2015 in Alaska is what boat owners and crews are prepping for right now.  Crabbers are loading and stacking pots, gear and provisions are being loaded, boat maintenance and engine tightening and tuning is being down throughout the fleet from the Pacific Northwest up to Dutch Harbor AK.  Fall is upon us and Red Crab season is here.

Salmon fishing summer of 2015 was a bit more of a flop than expected.  This is why boat owners need to leverage revenue and participate in different fisheries throughout the year.  Unfortunately only a handful of highliner gillnetters and seiners came home bragging after this past summer season.  Some years fishermen can afford to come home and by a Porche and some seasons they can afford a new Ford.  Salmon season in AK waters of 2015 for most they can afford a Ford.

Fishing in Alaska is delectate dance of knowing your fishery regulations and being on top of all the needed paperwork, standards and regulations such as:  2015 – 2016 Computation Quota Share (QS) and Processor Quote Share (PQS) Pools A computation quota pool for a fishery is the sum of all quota units issued for that fishery that is used for IFQ/IPQ computations. To determine the annual awards of IFQ and IPQ to Quota holders and cooperatives, on the day of computation NMFS will use the quota pools as of that date, each person’s quota holdings and co-op and affiliation information, and the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) established by the State of Alaska. The basic IFQ/IPQ computation formula unadjusted for affiliation or other limitations is: QS/PQS holdings / Quota Share Pool, TAC = pounds to Quota holder. Once it is issued in IFQ/IPQ computations, a QS or PQS pool does not change for that crab fishing year.
