Wizard, Deadliest Catch Boat, Alaska Bering Sea Crabber, like most of the Crab Boat Fleet, getting ready for AK Summer Salmon Tender Season! Last year marked year one of the Wizard at a summer Salmon Tender, this marks year two, like all new tender conversions there are bugs and gear shifts to work out. Alaska Salmon Fishermen who deliver their fish to Tenders top priorities are: 1. Speed 2. Nice & Friendly Captain & Crew – & if they can grab any kind of a hot meal or show that’s also a major plus. A good AK Salmon Tender has provisions for purchase, fuel, water and for some God awful reason gillnetters and seiners love to off load their trash, handing it off to Tenders to offload for them, this is especially for those fishermen who spend their time between openings on the hook!
Wizard, AK Deadliest Catch Crab Boat known for her salty history, she’s single deck crab vessel designed for ocean service with a single diesel-oil propulsion engine and single rudder, single prop design. The Wizard was built in 1945 by Ira Bushey & Sons, out of Brooklyn, New York originally as a US Navy design as a yard oiler. After the Wizard served in the US Navy she was decommissioned and tied up in Boston Harbor until September 1974. In 1974, the vessel was sold to a private party and used as a molasses hauler for around 8 months. In 1978, John Jorgensen purchased the Wizard and converted her at Bender Shipbuilding of Mobile, AL to serve as a crab fishing vessel, a lot of refit changes took place, such as her bow thruster in 1978. The Wizard has been in Bering Sea crab fisheries since conversion in the late 70’s.
Captain Keith Colburn, shares on the Deadliest Catch show the long history of the Wizard and the many superstitions he has while at the helm. Colburn is like most AK fishermen where superstitions are a way of life and a way of boat sanity while at sea!
After his past AK Hurricane season in the Bering Sea thanks to El Nino & La Nina, forecasters say AK salmon season will run early, fast and hard. A lot of AK tenders went up early this season, really early. Crab Boat Wizard is one of the last handful of boat that are still in Seattle, hanging out in Ballard getting the boat ready to run uphill to take fish. God bless our fishermen and their families, may ya’ll have a safe and strong AK salmon season!
