Locks Centennial Boat Parade, Hiram M. Chittenden Locks Boat Parade; On July 9, 2017, was the commemorative this historic event by re-creating that parade. The historic schooner Adventuress will pass through the locks and lead a marine parade of historic vessels from Salmon Bay into Lake Union. Adventuress lead the boat parade followed by many gorgeous wooden sailboats, powerboats, custom steel haul boats, Western Towboat Tug Flyer, Fremont Tugboat and many vessel spectator boats lined up and down the WA Ship Canal mid morning on July 9th leading the Parade eastbound down our narrow canal to Lake Union on a perfect Pacific Northwest sunny day.
PNW Boating activities begin at 10 am on July 9th, leading up to the Adventuress transiting the Locks west to east. The Adventuress, standing in for the SS Roosevelt, the first large ocean-going vessel to transit the Locks west to east, entered the large lock at approximately 10:15 am. The VHF marine traffic buzz was booming on this fine morning as the boats got into position to get a lift in the locks. As Adventuress entered the Ship Canal at the east end of the Locks large locks chamber, the Adventuress was joined by vessels pleasure craft and commercial of all sizes, including Glory Be and Keewaydin the ex-Honey Boy, they were in the first Locks boat parade.
There were over 50 registered boats in the parade. The parade ended at South Lake Union, where the Adventuress was moored at the north wall at Lake Union Park. There was a docent of historians and printed information at several official viewing spots. It was a great opportunity to learn and see historic marine traffic in the amazing, majestic Pacific Northwest historic marine industry.
