Starbound, 300 ft. Catcher Processor makes her way westbound down the WA Ship Canal departing Seattle with an assist by two Western Towboat tugboats early in the morning and early after the New Year of 2018. The start to mid January means lots of catcher processors are gearing up for this months departure to get back up to the Bering Sea, Alaska Pollock season is here. Aleutian Spray Fisheries, ASF has a fleet of vessels including Starbound and the mobile armada of freezer-longline and combination fishing vessels. The Alaska Pollock Fishery has been certified as sustainable by the London based Marine Stewardship Council. Aleutian Spray Fisheries seafood products are smart environmental seafood choices. Pollock fishing is not for the faint of heart they are hard to find in the massive sea, and crew on deck will tell you its a back breaking grind getting on Pollock; these captain’s who run these massive 300 ft. plus ships in the Bering Sea are by in large in a league of their own when it comes to salty sea experience. It’s a massive economic responsibility running a vessel and crew of this size. Getting on the fish is a multi-million dollar seasonal reward.
The Starboats Fleet is run by: Aleutian Spray Fisheries, established in 1969 by Naval Architect, Henry Swasand, with the acquisition of the crab vessel Aleutian Spray. As the firm grew during the 1970’s, due to the rapid growth in the Bering Sea King crab fishery, other members of the Swasand family joined their father. Today, a third generation of Swasands is active in the management of Aleutian Spray Fisheries. ASF, participates in what are known as the world’s best managed fisheries. The Alaska Pollock Fishery has been certified as sustainable by the London-based Marine Stewardship Council.
