Port of Seattle is the new owner of Salmon Bay Marina in the WA Ship Canal next to Fishermen’s Terminal. In June 2018 it’s official, the Port of Seattle acquires Salmon Bay Marina. Salmon Bay Marina has been family owned and operated, privately owned with five docks, 166 slips with a total of 6,547 lineal feet of moorage on freshwater, just west of Fishermen’s Terminal and just east of Salmon Bay Marine Center, SBMC; our ship canal superyacht yacht marina near the Ballard Locks.
Salmon Bay Marina land part of the marina sits on was purchased by Draper Machine Works Incorporated in 1945 and the marina was opened in 1961. The purchase of the marina from the Draper family ends 72 years of private ownership, formally family owned and operated.
The Port of Seattle has expanded by purchasing of Salmon Bay Marina with adding a five-acre marina located west of Fishermen’s Terminal. The marina was purchased from the current owners for $15 million and change. Next up, the Port of Seattle will be spending $900,000 on environmental remediation and improvements.
Commission President Tom Albro stated, “The purchase of Salmon Bay Marina is a step toward fulfilling our Century Agenda goal to double the number of jobs in our region associated with fishing and maritime and is financially smart for the Port,” said Albro in a press release by the Port of Seattle. “It also protects urban industrial and maritime land, which is also environmentally wise.” adds Albro. With a Century Agenda the Port of Seattle’s plan is to add 100,000 new jobs to the Seattle area over the next 25 years, for a total of 300,000 port-related jobs in the Pacific Northwest region. The Port of Seattle aims to do so while simultaneously reducing their environmental footprint. The addition of Salmon Bay Marina, with its 60,000-square-foot space, is a step toward their goal. The space could potentially be used as space for light industry that could support maritime and manufacturing businesses in the area; it is positive maritime economic impact in the right direction.
Salmon Bay Marina new ownership by the Port of Seattle questions are as follows, whether there will be free parking – the Port does not expect a change to the current parking policy. The Port has stated that they will not be accommodating any guest moorage at this time, but it many be subject to change in the future, TBA. A new month-to-month lease will need to be signed by existing slip vessel owners. As for paperwork the Port has stated, “All slip holders will be required, usual – to present the following: proof of Insurance in the amount of $300,000 – per RCW 53.08.480, coverage shall include general, legal, and pollution coverage, current Washington State Vessel Registration, signed Port Moorage Agreement, and signed Port Best Management Practices policy. Existing liveaboards will also have to fill out the Authorization to Liveaboard document.” At the moment their does not look to be a ton of changes, thus far these are reasonable vessel marina requirements.
There is downside to the new purchase, boat houses have to go! The Port of Seattle has stated that subleases will not be allowed, the boat houses will be removed, a sprinkler system will be added to the docks as a fire deterrent. The marina will be managed by the Port’s Recreational Boating Department, which already manages several other marinas. If there is a maintenance issue, the Ports professional craftspeople in Marine Maintenance will be able to respond in a timely manner. There is the ability to pay vessel moorage fees online, per marina life standard. As a Port of Seattle moorage customer, you are eligible to get discounted rates at other Port marinas. Marina tenants will have access to the Recreational Boating staff. For more information, visit: portseattle.org stay tuned for updates.
