Opening Day 2017, the official Seattle boating season kick off sponsored and presented by Seattle Yacht Club. Our Pacific Northwest has the largest opening day of boating season in the USA. Opening day includes celebrations of all kinds of water activities and a wild, fun log boom that is first come first serve for yachts and boats to raft up. Festivities will include a morning of crew races lead by UW Husky rowing teams, a sailboat race, and the grand Opening Day boat parade on Saturday, May 6, 2017. This year the Opening Day theme is: Emerald City Aahs!
The Opening Day parade first launched through the Montlake Cut in 1920 shortly after the Seattle Yacht Club moved to its new and current location in Portage Bay, Seattle. Spectators, friends and families lined both sides of the Montlake Cut to view the 25 or 30 boats as they paraded by, flying their dress flags. Racing boats finished the celebration with a regatta in Lake Washington sponsored by the Queen City Yacht Club. Seattle’s Opening Day Parade and Regatta has since become a spring Pacific Northwest tradition; it has survived the war years. It’s important to note Opening Day 1946, was the biggest and most festive ever, nationwide. Seattle boaters take full advantage of every Opening Day boating season launch.
