SEATTLE—Shilshole Bay Marina celebrates National Marina Day on June 8, where marinas across the country invite community members to their facilities to show them the important role marinas play as family-friendly gateways to boating, and the responsibility marina personnel have as stewards of the environment.  This year’s festivities include free Argosy boat rides, sailing lessons, a swap meet, live music, food and beverages.

“This is an opportunity for everyone to find out what great things marinas do,” said Bob Ross of Sail Northwest.  “Nothing beats being on a boat in Puget Sound.”

The Shilshole Bay Marina Group is banding together to present the 3rd Annual Open Boat Event and Swap Meet on the same day, to benefit the Leukemia Cup Regatta “Sailing for a Cure” (www.leukemiacup.org/wa), which includes Sail for a Cure sailboat rides every 30 minutes by the Shilshole Bay Tenant Group in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

“It’s fantastic that the community is coming together to support this year’s Leukemia Cup Regatta,” said Brianna Rockenstire of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  “This year’s proceeds will help fund lifesaving blood cancer research being done in Seattle.”

Events kick off at 8:30 a.m. on June 8, with the Swap Meet at Shilshole Bay Marina parking lot.  Main events such as boat rides, sailing lessons, liveaboard and open boat tours, along with a children’s bouncy house, will be happening from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The Coast Guard Auxillary will be onsite doing vessel safety checks and handing out pump-out adapter kits.  Other onsite activities include line tossing competitions, knot tying demonstrations, life jackets sizing and safety equipment for sale.  There will also be food, music, beverages throughout the day and a live band from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
