Greenpeace, M/V Arctic Sunrise is in Seattle just east of the Ballard Locks. They are in the Pacific Northwest to then run up to Alaska, they plan to work the pipeline all the way down the west coast to Southern California. Since 1996, Greenpeace, Vessel Arctic Sunrise has sailed the world documenting offshore oil pollution, thwarting commercial whaling, and bearing witness to the impacts of climate change. Thank you Greenpeace for helping protect our oceans, bays and sounds.
Arctic Sunrise on her very first voyage went to the North Sea and the northeast Atlantic, to document Greenpeace marine pollution from offshore oil drilling. Arctic Sunrise has also worked everywhere from within 450 miles of the North Pole to Antarctica’s Ross Sea while navigating both the Congo and the Amazon Rivers. They put the A’ in ‘Adventure around the globe.
Arctic Sunrise is a tough girl, the ship’s designed as an “icebreaker” with a rounded keel-less hull, this allows her to navigate through sea ice. In 1997, the Arctic Sunrise became the first ship to circumnavigate James Ross Island in the Antarctic, a journey only made possible by climate change after a 200m thick ice shelf connecting the island to the Antarctic continent collapsed.
Her name Arctic Sunrise fits perfectly as a vessel description, the Arctic Sunrise has made multiple journeys to the Arctic Circle, including visits to Alaska, Norway, Russia, and more to oppose and bear witness to environmental destruction at the hands of the oil industry.
Around the globe in Southern Oceans the Arctic Sunrise, along with its sister ship the Esperanza, thwarted Japanese attempts to pursue its so called – “scientific” whaling program. It also chased pirate vessels fishing illegally for Patagonian Toothfish to the pirate port of Mauritius. Amen for these captains and crews, with big balls and no fear factor to save our living natural habitat and sea animals.
Greenpeace plan is always will be to defend the natural world and promote peace by investigating, exposing, and confronting environmental abuse, championing environmentally responsible solutions, and advocating for the rights and well-being of all people. “Empowerment goes both ways,” says Greenpeace. “The weight and resources that we’re able to devote to pushing for a greener and more peaceful world is only made possible because of the courage, heart, and the collective power of people like you,” also stated by Greenpeace about people who care.
The maritime industry and community can thank Greenpeace for their committed efforts of protecting our oceans. Healthy oceans are the life support and life line – system for our planet, providing 97 percent of the Earth’s livable habitat and a home to more than 700,000 species. The oceans are vital to human health as well, providing jobs, enjoyment, opportunities and food for billions of people around the world. Half of the oxygen we breathe is generated by our oceans. For humans, our oceans are our life line on this planet.
