F/V Destination, sent distress signal on the morning of Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017, after two days of USCG searching they now ‘suspend’ the search in the Bering Sea of Alaska off the coast of St. George Island. U.S. Coast Guard officials still say there is no sign of the boat or the six crew members onboard since searches found its emergency beacon that Saturday afternoon.
F/V Destination is a 98 ft. AK Bering Sea Crabber with a salty season crew on board. She’s usually out of Sand Point AK or Seattle WA. Just this last spring Destination was spotted running up and down our Seattle Ship Canal, over at Trident Old Yard saddled up next to AK Tenders, Draggers and the other per usually crabbers. F/V Destination also did touch and goes over on the west wall at Fishermen’s Terminal. She’s a busy boat with a happy crew; and lots of hoop-laa’s and Salty Dog Lab barks and waves in the canal hello’s while underway east and westbound in the canal.
So far the USCG has not released theories as to what may have happened to F/V Destination. One can only speculate about the seas, wind and ice build up on the boat this time of year in the fishing season. St. George locals and residents are patrolling the shore for signs of the F/V Destination and her crew members. Two volunteer fishing vessels F/V Bering Rose and F/V Silver Spray have responded and searching in the assist. At this point it’s heartbreaking. The news of F/V Destination has spread like wildfire across the AK fishing grounds and throughout the Pacific Northwest and lower 48. God bless the crew and captain on F/V Destination, our prayers are with all the crew members family and loved ones; you are on our hearts and minds. RIP F/V Destination.
