Destination, Alaska Crab Boat: NOAA research vessel found missing F/V Destination that sank February 11, 2017. The Destination, a seasoned Alaska Bering Sea crabber was discovered in nearly 250 feet of water just northwest of St. George Island, Alaska, described by the US Coast Guard, USCG. NOAA ships have been surveying the area with sonar to find the wreck since the spring, this find brings great closure and hopefully answers many unknown factors and questions, and the boat sank in February and was found in July, nearly 6 months later.

U.S. Coast Guard dive team dove in July 2017; aboard the cutter Healy, they used a remotely operated vehicle, ROV to investigate the wreckage of the sunken AK crab boat.  F/V Destination was on its way from Dutch Harbor to St. Paul Island at the beginning of the opilio crab season when the vessel disappeared in the Bering Sea on an early Saturday morning. US Coast Guard Marine Board of Investigation and the National Transportation Safety Board will be conducting investigations of the sinking crabber that went down without a trace in February.

F/V Destination was often spotted in the lower 48 WA Ship Canal buzzing between Fishermen’s Terminal and docking over by Trident Seafood’s Old Yard across from Ocean Beauty. The Destination has a seasoned, experienced and extra salty crew on board when she sank. We will miss the many Salty Dog lab barks and wave as the Destination cruised around the canal, with the happy smiles of crew on deck in the Seattle sun. RIP Destination: it’s not fair!

Captain Jeff Hathaway and crabber crew members Kai Hamik, Larry O’Grady, Darrik Seibold, Raymond Vincler and Charles G. Jones were lost with the boat when it sank in February 2017. The captain and all crew members were legally declared dead in a presumptive death hearing about a month after the Coast Guard suspended their massive search efforts. This sent shivers and sad hearts up and down the coast in our close and tightly bonded Pacific Northwest and Alaska fishing community.

The F/V Destination and her crew were lost at sea February 11, 2017. The 95 foot crab vessel Destination, vanished two miles off the Pribilof Island of St. George, Alaska.  Six crew members on board and the boat is lost into the Bering Sea. We send out our Prayers for F/V Destination and their families.
