F/V Brenna A. Deadliest Catch, Alaska Bering Sea Crabber, homeport is Seattle usually in our WA Ship Canal. If you’re new to the F/V Brenna A. Dwyer family story, here’s a little nugget. Bear in mind, every commercial fishing boat; each has a unique family history and stories that will make you laugh, are full of pride, tradition, hard work and pull at your heart strings.
Here’s a pin-prink about F/V Brenna A. – In late summer, early fall of 2016 the Dwyer Family, Captain Sean, Mama Jenny Dwyer and crew did a-hurry-up and get the boat ready for her first time fishing as an Alaska Bering Sea Crabber. Deadliest Catch approached the family to appear on the Discovery Channel TV show Deadliest Catch in its 12th Season. Today, F/V Brenna A. has wrapped her 2nd season on Deadliest Catch getting ready to appear on season 13. Although some fishermen for superstition sake would rather call this 2017 season of Deadliest Catch 12 + 1.
Pat Dwyer father of Sean Dwyer, is a local legend in the commercial fishing world of Seattle, the PNW and Alaska. In 2004 Pat was diagnosed with the awful, jerk of a disease ALS. I will never forget the day I was sitting on the deck of F/V Brenna in January 2013, Sean – such a young kid at the time described his fishing family and Dad – at that time wheelchair bound, but Sean was darn sure to let me know, ‘the boats were his life,’ described Sean. Pat was running F/V Brenna A. as a summer salmon tender and at that time F/V Jennifer A. the sister boat a Marco boat, Alaska Bering Sea Crabber; Sean at that time just got back from crabbing in the Bering Sea on the deck of F/V Jennifer A. Pat ran the boats – all from driving his chair in the lower 48. In June of 2013, Pat lost one hell of a battle with ALS. It was heart breaking to see the boat depart to Alaska for summer salmon tending that early summer season. Who knew less than a few years later the Brenna A. would be crabbing in Alaska’s Bering Sea, and Sean isn’t on deck anymore he’s – now in the chair at the helm.
An annual event that the Dwyer family is active in – is the Seattle Corntoss Challenge, May 6, 2017, at Hales Brewery in Ballard, WA. Sounds like Hales Brewery will have Brenna A. beer on tap. Save the date: #endALS.
Jenny Dwyer, AKA: the boat F/V Jennifer A. named after mama Jenny, Brenna Dwyer AKA: F/V Brenna A. the boat named after daughter/sister Brenna. Jenny and Pat Dwyer started St. George Marine in 1986. In addition to being president of St. George Marine after Pat passed away, Jenny is also extremely active in growing her family business. When Pat was diagnosed with ALS the Dwyer family built a lobby government on fish issues that became a partnership with working to live with ALS. With this partnership Jenny has been in the vain in the committed line to advocate for ALS cause and cure. From the local ALS Association chapter to benefit people with ALS in the Pacific Northwest greater region to a nation platform level. The Dwyer family, has worked extensively to ensure the passage of the ALS Registery out of WA DC. Some call ALS a ‘death sentence disease’ – support ALS help find a cure today!
FYI: ALS is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, Charcot’s disease, and motor neuron disease (MND), it attacks certain cells in the brain and spinal cord needed to keep our muscles moving. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder. Each person’s case and symptoms are different, the community of people with ALS and the care providers are very supportive of one another.
If you have ever been a full time care provider for a loved one you know, how trying and taxing it on both parties the person needing the care and the caregiver. At times the disease takes over and it can be a very lonely, challenging experience. God bless the Dwyer Family and mama Jenny for being a hardworking, excellent care giver to Pat. God bless this family, they have had their share of trials and tribulations. Hopefully Pat is all smiles at his boats and family as he looks down from heaven to see his F/V Brenna A. on the herd in the Bering Sea and Sean at the helm. Keep up the great work Captain Sean, this kid was a kind hearted well mannered kid – before Deadliest Catch and he’s now got some facial hair and still a well mannered young man! Go F/V Brenna A. thank you for being an AK Crabber Family that leads by great example!
