Scuttle-Butt about Deadliest Catch – here’s the scoop if your new to picking up what they lay down while fishing in the world’s snottiest seas and conditions: Deadliest Catch is an award winning and (Yes, this shocking to us local who live in the PNW that live by and around these foul-mouthed crabbers salt and peppered all over the canal) popular reality TV series that follows the real life, day to day adventures of Alaskan fishermen in one of the most dangerous environments and weather systems on earth the Bering Sea of Alaska. An original series created for the Discovery Channel by Thom Beers with the first season that has premiered on Discovery on April 12, 2005, the show has completed 13 seasons and just now rolls into Season 14 of Deadliest Catch set to air this spring.
Deadliest Catch chronicles the real-life track records and drama at sea and on land of one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. Crab fishing on the unpredictable, mother nature as a beast in the Bering Sea. Based in the Aleutian Islands port of Dutch Harbor, Alaska – the show features life aboard the fishing vessels during the crab fishing seasons and in the midst of some of the coldest and stormiest waters. With an emphasis on the dangers of the job; hence the name of the show. Underway while fishing crews duck heavy crab pots swinging into position, and maneuver hundreds of pounds of crab across a deck packed with potentially deadly hazards, not to mention the relentless build up deadly ice and waves the sizes of sky scrapers, ready to swallow a boat with no notice. As we all miss the F/V Destination, AK Crab boat that was lost at sea February 2017, just last year. Hearts break for these fishermen that were taken into the Bering Sea forever and their family and loved ones.

Deadliest Catch Season 14, brings a lot of opportunities to these fishermen and their families, and you bet they are cashing in and not crying as they run to the bank! God bless their success and may they keep humble hearts – be nice guys! Deadliest Catch has become a long running staple of the Discovery Network has become bigger than the show itself with the Deadliest Catch franchise taking over the world of merchandize, books, video games and other entertainment outlets. Having won 16 Emmys so far and still holding a solid viewership of over 2.5 Million viewers per episode, not to mention that the show is being broadcast in 200 countries worldwide, a fourteenth season seems almost inevitable.
Deadliest Catch, might not be the same, changes are coming thick and fast, per health and families change over time. It has long been rumored that veteran F/V Northwestern Captain Sig Hansen, especially after his serious heart attack last year, might not come back for the long term, and he will be grandfather soon, which could persuade him to leave the series for good. Another big factor could be the tragedy surrounding the sinking of the F/V Destination and the disappearance of six well-known crew members including their captain.
Loosing the F/V Destination last winter rocked the entire commercial fishing industry from the Pacific Northwest to Alaska, we will all miss seeing her blue haul buzzing around the Ship Canal and getting endless Ballard Bridge lifts; with her touch and goes from Fishermen’s Terminal. God Bless our Fishermen and their families on land and at sea! It’s not fair – RIP F/V Destination!!!
