Ballard Locks, The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks will close to all marine traffic in the Fall, October 29 to November 21, 2018 – this is the usual annual program of Locks closures, although this year after more than 100 years of operation the the busy Ballard Locks gets many needed upgrades.

The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, Ballard Locks is the massive marine traffic source from the Puget Sound, WA to Lake Union, WA the Locks are finally getting a shave and a haircut upgrade. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has granted the Ballard Locks with $10.5 million to replace the original gates of the large locks chamber and swinging gates.

The Ballard Locks are famous for being the busiest Locks in the nation, with over 40,000 vessels, such as commercial, superyachts, workboats, passenger vessels, research vessels, charter boats and more… with 150,000 salmon, with over 1.2 million visitors each year annually. The 100 year old wood and creosote lining and the Locks old and strong structure are very beat up by the Pacific Northwest elements. The Ballard Locks are FREE to the public and funded by the Department of Defense is delegated by the amount of marine traffic and commercial cargo that moves through the gates year round, the Ballard Locks upgrade is well overdue and the time in now to be completed in 2019.

The Ballard Locks will be closed for annual upgrades October 29 to November 21 2018. At this time the large Locks center gate bushing and gudgeon pin, which is used to support the Locks extensive weight will also be replaced.

The Ballard Locks facelift will begin with the large Locks that will undergo four closures totaling 45 days. The first closure is scheduled for Oct. 12 – Nov. 30, 2019. Followed by more closures in February through April 2020 and again in October and November 2020. This will certainly have a huge impact on the busy commercial fishing and workboat fleets in the greater Seattle region.
