Alaska Young Fishermen’s Summit Series, Anchorage AK, December 6 – 8, 2017: Marine Advisory Program, Sea Grant Alaska. The 2017 Alaska Young Fishermen’s Summit is at the Dena’ina Center in Anchorage; its focused on – Building a Network of Future Fishing Leaders. It was established in a decade ago in 2007 by the Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program. The Alaska Young Fishermen’s Summit, AYFS – is a three-day networking and skill-building conference for new entrants in managing modern commercial fishing businesses. The event is fast-paced, features prominent industry leaders as speakers and mentors, and energizes younger fishermen to network with peers from throughout the state of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest.

At Alaska Young Fishermen’s Summit Series: What do participants get out of attending?
- Three days of training in the land-based aspects of running a fishing operation: marketing, business management, the fisheries regulatory process, and the science of fisheries management
- Meet, socialize, and talk about issues with other young fishermen from around the state, as well as well-known fishing industry leaders
- Field trips include management meetings, universities, laboratories, hatcheries, legislative offices, etc…. it’s a wealth of info.
Young Fishermen – Participants practice public speaking, learn Alaska Board of Fisheries and North Pacific Management Council processes, and collaborate on solutions to issues and topics of importance to the Alaska fishing industry.
Alaska Sea Grant – Vision Is: Alaska will sustain its vibrant marine, coastal, and watershed ecosystems, with strong coastal communities and people who make decisions using science-based and traditional knowledge for the social and economic benefit of all Alaskans.
Alaska Sea Grant – Mission Is: Alaska Sea Grant’s mission is to enhance the wise use and conservation of Alaska’s marine, coastal, and watershed resources through research, education, and extension.
Alaska Sea Grant is a partnership between NOAA and the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Sea Grant has worked in Alaska for over 46 years supporting healthy coastal resources, strong economies and vibrant communities through research, education and outreach via 12 Marine Advisory agents who live and work in eight coastal communities.
Alaska Sea Grant has invested over $ 2.5 million in research and outreach support in Alaska’s growing mariculture industry over the last 10 plus years, including the potential for growing seaweed as a new Alaska Industry.
The Alaska Young Fishermen’s Summit was held for the sixth time in Juneau in 2016. Over 350 young, professional commercial fishermen have attended the summits. Of those, 95% are still fishing, over 70% have attended or participated in the regulatory process and over 60% have joined or started an industry association.
The Alaska Sea Grant State Fellowship, the Sea Grant Knauss Fellowship and graduate student traineeships all build the next generation of Alaska resource managers. Three Alaska State Fellows, two Knauss Fellows and 18 graduate students are working with Alaska Sea Grant support. Sea Grant is committed to the focus of enhancing Alaska coastal economies and fisheries.
