The Selene 92 Ocean Explorer is well on it’s way through construction, hull and deck were joined this week.  This is a Guido de Groot and Howard Chen design collaboration which brings in the venerable and experienced de Groot styling and the naval architecture of Howard Chen and Jet Tern Marine.  The Selene 92 Ocean Explorer is simply impressive and everyone involved is excited to get it into the water and out cruising.

This is the second model of the Selene Ocean Explorer Series, which includes the Selene 78 (also under construction) and Selene 92, as well as the tri-deck series of 108, 118, and 128 Selene Ocean Explorers.  Captain David Kane with Selene Seattle just returned from the Jet Tern Marine shipyard in Zhuhai after reviewing construction with the owner of the 92 Selene.  A second-time Selene buyer, this owner will captain the Selene 92 himself with family and welcomes the ability to do some very long range cruising early next year.  Construction began a year ago and is expected to complete at the start of the New Year.

92 selene build

The 92 Selene Ocean Explorer is designed as a full displacement yacht with twin MTU engines, ABT zero-speed stabilization, 3000 miles range, and a layout that highlights the exceptional design of Guido de Groot.  The exterior styling is a blend of the graces of de Groot design elements and the tough, no nonsense look of the traditional Selene Ocean Trawlers.  Construction of flybridge is under way and interior staterooms and main deck are progressing nicely.  The Guido de Groot interior will create an elegant living space for the owners while blending the tough exterior of a the long range expedition trawler into the Selene 92 Ocean Explorer.

The general comments when new people see the Selene 92 hull  often range from a quiet “Wow” to loud “IT’S HUGE!”.   When they get up close and stand under the hull, see the construction, and stand in the engine room, all agree that the Selene 92 is going to be one tough boat.  While the hull has graceful lines that speak to a smooth ride, the aggressive angle of the pilothouse windows and the upper bridge deck speak to it’s Selene Ocean Trawler heritage.
