FILSON DIVES INTO SEATTLE’S 21ST CENTURY MARITIME INDUSTRY: Outdoor outfitter hosts panel with Divers Institute of Technology, Pacific Fishermen Shipyard & Western Towboat Co. Filson, Seattle’s outdoor outfitter since 1897, will host its first panel discussion with local maritime industry experts. Moderated by KEXP’s Sharlese Metcalf, producer and host of Audioasis, will bring a fresh perspective to this sometimes unseen industry.

For the last 120 years, Filson has been outfitting workers who brave the harshest conditions, including the maritime industry made up of ship builders, commercial fishermen and professional divers. “Beneath the Surface” is a panel discussion that will bring together expert representatives from one of the oldest and most sustainable industries in Seattle-Maritime Trade.

To further Filson’s commitment to supporting the maritime work trade, the company will be awarding a scholarship to a future student of Diver’s Institute of Technology (DIT).

Panel participants include-

Britt Coates of Divers Institute of Technology has 9 years of underwater diving experience and has logged 700 hours of industrial diving time. His commercial diving career has brought him as far north as Dutch Harbor, Alaska to as far south as Palmer Station, Antarctica on projects ranging from repairing bridges, dams, oil rigs and even nuclear power plants.

Doug Dixon, Managing Owner of Pacific Fishermen Shipyard, has over 4 decades of experience at the shipyard. He’s a licensed Naval Architect, Marine Engineer and a legal expert witness for sinking, man overboard, and oil pollution cases.

Russell Shrewsbury of Western Towboat, has been involved in his family business since he started off as a deckhand at the age of 13. If he wasn’t on a tug, he was spending his time at the shipyard helping his father build and maintaining their tugs. Russell estimates he’s probably made the trip back and forth to Alaska over 100 times.
